The Woman

Alexis Grenier is a recent graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio.  Having received a Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance and a Masters in Opera Theatre, she moved back to her home in San Diego, California. She began acting and singing in musical theatre as a child and continued doing various shows throughout high school and college, including singing the National anthem for the San Diego Padres. Having spent six years studying and performing opera in Oberlin, Ohio and Tuscany, she has recently turned her attention toward film acting and other genres of music.

Alexis is currently filming an original TV show pilot entitled “Travel Notes.”  She frequently appeared as an extra in “The Ex List” (CBS) and “Monk” (USA). Alexis enjoys writing original music as well as singing in a “semi-classical” style. In 2007 she recorded an album including Portuguese, French and English art songs and lullabies. Her goal is to complete an entirely original album this year with a more folksy style as in her original, “Back to You” (2007).

The Interview

Here's a question usually not the first asked: what color best describes you and why?
Yellow. I usually have a sunny disposition and am constantly drawn to brightness and positivism in others.

Favorite ice cream flavor?
Mint chip

On the iPod, Part Un - what three songs are your absolute fave right now?
Being a musician, my playlists are constantly changing; I have never been able to have a “favorite song.” There are just too many! My iPod would probably make you confused or laugh at its eclectic nature; Renee Fleming (opera) will morph into David Barnes that will morph into Putumayo’s Latin Groove or Djavan (LOVE world music). Then you’ll find some jazzy Jamie Cullum, folksy Brandi Carlile or my newest addition, pop singer, Adele.

On the iPod, Part Deux - peeping any good TV shows or movies on download these days?
Not recently on download but I have returned momentarily to the good old fashioned TV and have found the shows “The Mentalist” and “Top Chef” always entertaining!

Dream role: What past movie would you sell your soul (figuratively, of course - lol) to have played the lead role in?
Ok, don‘t laugh but “Singin' in the Rain” with Gene Kelly. As a child I would watch the movie endlessly; for the songs and story but mostly for Gene. I actually proposed to him in a letter when I was 9 (didn’t know he was in his eighties) The best part was him writing me a personalized letter back (quite touching since he passed away a few years later).

You're a singer, a songwriter, and an actress. What do you get from involving yourself in the arts?
I gain everything from being involved with the arts. The creative process is both thrilling and stimulating. Though it is rewarding to see the product of my hard work, I am immediately looking for another outlet for my creativity. I believe that music and the arts are essential to our wellbeing. Historically, the entertainment/art industry has always held fast, even in times of economic crisis. It brings relief, life, and pleasure, often enabling us to endure even the most difficult situations.

Singing...acting: do you have a favorite between the two?
Singing has always been my passion, but acting has proven an amazing way to express myself as well. Now that I have completed my degree in music, I have more time to study acting and explore my talent on screen.

I have to say that I'm super-psyched about the upcoming web series, Jenn2.0 (http://makingjenn20.com/). How did you learn about the show, the role?
I actually learned about the role through my manager Camie Carpenter, who said, “Look, this would be perfect for you!” I agreed. I was the first to audition, which usually isn’t good because you are kind of the guinea pig, but it turned out well I think!

Tell us a little bit about Jenn2.0 and the character you play, Jenn Leary.
Jenn is an intelligent, computer savvy girl, who maybe didn’t fit in perfectly in high school because of it. However, now in her twenties, she has found a way to use both her intelligence and social skills successfully in her job. She builds countless networks and makes friends far and wide (some she might not even know she has!) She struggles with her day-to-day relationships because her job as a social media consultant and the maintenance of all her online networks consume her. Her mother misses her, and her ‘boyfriend’ Ian doesn’t really understand her ‘high-tech’ lifestyle. Jenn’s life is a balancing act of virtual and visible relationships.

How has the Jenn2.0 experience been different than everything else you've done thus far?
This is really my first leading part. The show perspective is truly innovative. The audience is watching the show through multiple sources; “Dave’s Camera”, her own iphone, and the main cam. Juggling technological devices and perspectives emphasizes Jenn’s struggle to balance between the many facets of her life.

For those who may have never seen a web series, how is Jenn 2.0 different than a regular TV series?
It is interesting, the episodes are shorter and the shows are available to a worldwide audience at any time of day after first airing.

What has been the single best thing about the Jenn2.0 experience?
It was a blast. NAS productions are probably the coolest crew you could work with. It was a great experience and I hope we get the opportunity to continue Jenn’s saga!

What's one thing you've learned about yourself while taking part in Jenn2.0?
That I am not as computer savvy as I thought!

What future aspirations do you have?
To host my own travel show that features my singing as well (working on it!) Also to complete an original CD.
